Untamed Grace: Photographing the Wild Mustangs of the Onaqui Mountains
There is an undeniable feeling of freedom that washes over you when you stand in the vast, dusty plains of Utah and watch a herd of wild horses crest a ridge. Earlier this year, I traveled to Tooele, Utah, to spend several unforgettable days documenting the legendary wild mustangs of the Onaqui Mountains.
I was fortunate to share this spectacular expedition with my good friend and fellow wildlife photographer, Charles Janson (be sure to explore his incredible work at C Janson Photography). Together, under the expert guidance of Jen Rogers, we immersed ourselves in the desert to witness and capture the raw, untamed spirit of these animals in their natural element.
Running in the Dust and Sparring for Dominance
The desert landscape provides a magnificent, minimalist canvas for action. Spending hours patiently tracking the herd lets you anticipate subtle shifts in their social hierarchy. Charles and I focused heavily on capturing the explosive energy of dynamic movement—from powerful stallions sparring for dominance to bands of horses running at a full gallop through fields of kicked-up dust. The grit and texture of the environment beautifully frame the muscle tone, flowing manes, and sheer intensity of these majestic animals.
Chasing the Light: Drama at Sunset
Photographing these mustangs requires a deep appreciation for the landscape's changing moods. The golden hour in the Utah desert is spectacular, throwing long shadows and bathing the plains in warm, rich light. One highlight of the trip was capturing a striking white horse rearing up on its hind legs in a dusty field at sunset, silhouetted against the brilliant sky while a dark horse sprinted beside it. Balancing that dramatic light against deep contrast lets the creature's soul truly emerge from the frame.
